About Talking Time
Talking Time encourages parents, grandparents, siblings, and
caregivers to become active participants in the child's communication
environment. You are important to the entire language learning process
and help by shaping, modeling, and imitating speech and language.
Since the first three years of a child's life are critical for
developing speech and language skills, Talking Time seeks to introduce
additional windows of opportunity in the everyday activities. Your
participation in these activities provides an exceptional opportunity to
connect with the child and enrich communication experiences. Talking
Time gives young children the chance to listen, imitate, name, respond
to questions, and interact with characters they see and hear.
You will also learn fun and beneficial ways to communicate with
your baby, giving them the right start for language and literacy. The
educational activities in this DVD is perfect for helping any toddler or
preschooler develop their language and speech skills.
The Talking Time™ cast of friendly animal puppets will show your
baby the mouth movements and sounds needed to develop normal speech. Our
work is based on over 60 years experience by two professors of
speech-language pathology.

Welcome to the Town of Talking Time™. We hope that you and your
baby have a wonderful time and learn important speech and language.
Our philosophy at Talking Time™ is to help your baby develop speech
and language skills in fun, natural and engaging ways. We do this by
modeling simple activities that your baby can imitate and you can use in
everyday situations.
Talking Time™ encourages:
Teaching a child to learn communication by listening to others
Imitating and copying
Responding to sounds and movements in play so the child is
encourages to interact
Using a playful, non-direct approach to speech and language
stimulation
Developing strong emotional attachments through activities
that are enjoyable and natural to the child and parent
Some of the key reasons for engaging in simple activities to
stimulate speech development are:
Speech skills develop best in an environment that is rich with
sounds and words
By six months of age, most children can recognize speech sounds
in their native language
There is a strong link between early speech development and later
abilities in reading and learning skills
Parents and care-givers play a vital role in speech and language
development
Talking Time™ was developed for use by families and caregivers of
infants and toddlers to encourage speech and language interaction. Did
you know that YOU are the major influence in your child's speech and
language development?
The way you talk, hold your baby and use everyday situations has a
significant influence in stimulating your baby's speech. With just a
little guidance, any parent or caregiver can effectively communicate
with their baby.
The communication process begins at birth and requires sufficient
opportunity to create positive language experiences. Early speech and
language stimulation boosts a child's communication skills. Together,
parents and caregivers can create the most effective communication
environment for infants and toddlers.
The key is to enjoy this journey with your baby and encourage his
or her speech and language skills!
These activities include using non-speech sounds, speech sounds,
gestures and facial expression. Playing with and exploring lips, tongue
and teeth are important for speech and language development. From the
moment of birth, the baby is an active participant in infant-caregiver
communication relationship.
Everyday activities - such as meals, bath time, play time and
shopping provide the magic moments for stimulating your child's
communication. As natural as it may seem, it is easy to miss Talking
Time™ opportunities.
